Applying new AI techniques to the challenges our customers face

Lewis Gill, Head of KONUX Labs, 14.06.2022

Who are you?

I love a good technical challenge. I love to work on cutting-edge R&D that brings about positive changes in the world. Having to find a brand-new solution to a problem and proving that it works is something I find incredibly rewarding.

I grew up around railways and have worked in the industry since 2013, so one thing that I am really passionate about is improving rail transportation. For me, it is the best method for mass transport in the future, especially as we consider adapting our lifestyles to manage climate change.

I would describe myself as hard-working and dedicated. I like to push myself out of my comfort zone to try to achieve more, but also I like to inspire others to do the same. I love working with people, taking ideas, developing them, and seeing the benefits of that idea in action.

How did you end up here?

Initially, I was drawn to new product development to develop my software engineering skills, but as time went on, I gravitated towards the challenging, but exciting world of startups. These blend R&D activities with the practical impact of new products, but also bring a dynamic environment to work in.

Over the years, I developed specialisms in geographic computing and real-time data visualisation that eventually culminated in creating a successful bootstrapped startup in UK rail around these skill sets in 2014.

Being appointed Head of Labs at KONUX has been exciting for me because I can now work on R&D for product ideas that tackle international markets.

What are you most proud of accomplishing?

I’m really pleased to have been able to develop several innovative products that have enacted positive change on the punctuality and reliability of the rail network. As part of that, I won several rail industry innovation awards and was recognised with the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the innovation category.

However, it is the real-world impact of those products that I’m most proud of, whether that is improving the punctuality of the timetable, automatically detecting issues on the overhead lines, or helping rail staff respond to ill passengers and save lives.

What excites you about KONUX?

KONUX is at the forefront of what is possible with the combination of machine learning and IIoT in rail. I’m really excited to see how we can apply new AI techniques to the challenges that our rail customers face, not just in maintenance activities, but also in timetabling, and other network-level operations. I’m also looking forward to learning more about the different international rail markets that KONUX serves.

Having already developed a set of innovation award-winning products in UK rail, I am looking forward to using my experience to work on products at KONUX that have significant impact globally on railway operations.

And, KONUX has an incredible set of talented people, who share the same passion for improving the railways as I do.

What does innovation mean to you?

Innovation is a force for enacting positive change in how people approach problems they have to deal with on a regular basis. It involves ingenuity and hard work, but equally, it is best performed collaboratively to deliver the best results.

In one sentence: What are you looking forward to most?

Working with the best people to help solve the hard problems in rail worldwide.
