The Role

As part of the Engineering management team you will help shape the analytical future of an exciting and dynamic railway industry startup.  You are passionate about machine learning and AI and are able to oversee the transformation of complex highly technical models into production systems that are able to deliver customer value. You are able to interact with the other engineering team leads, from hardware, back-end, to front-end and help coordinate the data-science needed to deliver coherent data processing pipelines. From your interactions with product management you can see the big-picture and are able to drive the Data Science Team to develop the analytical insights needed to support the product in its current and future invocations.

Your Responsibilities

  • Lead the Data Science Team in scoping, designing, and implementing established and cutting-edge machine learning and advanced statistical models to build data science products that empower the railway industry

  • Provide operational and strategic management to the Data Science Team

  • Guide the Data Science Team in the adoption and improvement of an environment that produces agile and measurable research

  • Translate business requirements to data science problems and lead the team to deliver best in class solutions on startup timelines

  • In collaboration with the Analytics Research Lead provide hands-on technical guidance to challenging data science problems faced by the team on a day-to-day basis

  • Grow the Data Science team in Munich by hiring talented candidates and developing leadership and deep expertise in the team

  • Make strategic recommendations on data collection, integration and retention requirements incorporating business requirements and knowledge of best practices

  • Oversee major initiatives and, in conjunction with the Analytics Research Lead,  own the technical roadmap, always anticipating the future data and machine learning needs/opportunities of the business

  • Establish research policies, standards, organization and governance

Your Profile

  • 5-10 years of relevant experience in a data science/analytics role, preferably in an entrepreneurial environment

  • An experienced leader who has had accountability and authority over a company's data science resources

  • Experience in recruiting, managing, training, and retaining a team of ambitious and highly skilled data scientists

  • A leader who has the foresight and business context to provide the optimal data- science vision, strategy, and best practices for the company

  • Ability to collaborate with all stakeholders inside of the company to ensure all parties are aligned and supportive of the project's priority, requirements, timeline, and objectives

  • Advanced knowledge of mathematical/statistical/signal processing methods and tools

  • Experience in applying data analysis techniques to large datasets using systems such as Hadoop, Spark, or other similar frameworks

  • Advanced Experience with programming languages/environments such as C++, R, Python, Java, Scala, in Linux/Unix 

  • Demonstrable experience in the use of development and project management methodologies e.g. Agile and tools such as Jira

  • Experience with web services such as AWS, DigitalOcean, Redshift, S3, and Spark

  • Extremely flexible and adaptive to changing priorities

  • Remain current on latest advancements in analytical trends, techniques, and tools

  • Full working proficiency in English
